After her family emigrated to Brooklyn, NY, when just a young teen, Josephine’s path into the world of fine Italian cuisine continued with her late husband, Nino, who had his own restaurant at the time, Mamma Rosas. The two later moved from New York to Florida (with their two sons and daughter) where Josephine worked at Nino’s in Boca, which is now run by her son, Roberto and his family.
With a dream of having her own fine Italian establishment Josephine opened “Josephine’s”, it was an instant hit with dishes like the classic southern style Duck A L’orange, northern style Dover Sole, signature Veal Porcini and so many other dishes inspired by her culinary journey.
Josephine’s passion for creating an authentic Italian experience is evident down to every last detail. In an age of synthesized, Italian restaurant chains, Josephine’s of Boca Raton stands worlds apart. This is why, while so many other Italian style establishments have come and gone, Josephine’s has remained a go-to mainstay in Boca for 25 years. “Mangia bene!” And it’s all due to the gustatory passion of one person: Josephine herself, she meets you at the door…and she NEVER forgets a face.
Meet Josephine
Il vero affare!
Growing up in Sicily as the middle child in a family of nine, Josephine was surrounded by true Italian culinary inspiration, learning the importance of “fresh” at an early age. Her family had a garden where they grew their own string beans, squash, peppers, tomatoes and fresh herbs, they also had figs and pears, and picked and cold-pressed their own olive oil. They made their own wine by the barrel.
Josephine learned the true “art” of Italian cooking from both her mother and her grandmother, both outstanding cooks. The family would gather each Sunday at her grandmother’s house. There Josephine watched her grandmother prepare meatballs, sausage, the ‘gravy’ (tomato sauce) and homemade pasta. At this “school” measurements weren’t in cups or ounces but in pinches of this and that. There were no recipes here. Everything was measured by feel, touch, sight and, ultimately, smell and taste, because in authentic Italian cooking that is what tells you when everything is perfect.
